GAITHERSBURG, MD - (January 15, 2019) Winter 2018-19 is at a crossroads at its halfway point, as an anomalously-warm first half of the season gives way to an invasion of Arctic air set to commence this weekend. Another strong storm looks to bring heavy snow to portions of the Midwest and Northeast this weekend and will be followed by an Arctic airmass that will set up shop over the eastern half of the US.

“The coldest weather of the season to date is set to arrive early next week, with Chicago expected to experience subzero lows while temperatures plunge into the teens in New York City,” says Bradley Harvey, Lead Forecaster with Radiant Solutions. “This marks the beginning of a pattern supportive of a direct connection to the Arctic, importing frigid air southward into the US at times through the latter third of January.” With some computer models projecting a piece of the polar vortex migrating southward toward the Hudson Bay, it is possible that the final week of January could be even colder than currently advertised. Radiant Solutions also anticipates a colder than normal February with further opportunities for Arctic outbreaks.
