A broad area of high pressure is leading to dry and hot conditions across most of the European continent this week, causing temperatures to reach well above normal thresholds and in some cases shattering records. Maxar’s Weather Desk is forecasting Berlin, Germany to peak Wednesday afternoon with a high of 37C (98F).

“The large ridge of high pressure is not just influencing high population centers in central Europe but extends into the Iberian Peninsula as well,” said Matthew Dross, Maxar’s European Meteorologist. The forecast high temperature in Madrid, Spain is expected to peak 40C (105F) late this week. Frankfurt, Germany has a high likelihood of breaking a June record set back in 1947.

Unlike the U.S., most of Europe is not equipped to endure such extreme heat. In many locations, school children are still attending classes. In France, authorities have made arrangements to lengthen swimming pool hours into the evening as well as set up cooling centers.

The weather this week could be very reminiscent of what took place just last year, especially across the northern parts of the continent, in which temperatures were well above normal. Widespread drought was also prevalent last year which caused river levels to decrease significantly and crop yields to be lower than normal.

The extreme temperatures will cause an increase in power demand for various utility grids. Beyond this week, Maxar’s Dross stated, “The extended forecast has the ridge continuing in place, albeit a bit weaker with the temperature extremes but still above normal readings continuing to be observed”. This early summer heatwave is likely to be the first of additional rounds of sweltering temperatures to come.
